Workshop: Ribbonwork – Embellishment by the Yard

It is one thing to make a pretty ribbon flower to embellish a hat or adorn a bodice; it is entirely another if you want to surround a neckline or the hem of a skirt. This half-day workshop provides the basic instruction to make a half-dozen different embellishments and variations on those basic designs. Students will be provided with all of the ribbons needed for the workshop, as well as a handout with instructions, and all the personal instruction you need.

Materials to bring to class:

• Hem gauge – if you have one. If not, I will provide a way to measure your ribbons without a gauge.
• Scissors
• Needles (embroidery needles work well), pins and thread (any color)

About the Instructor:

Sue McDonald is an avid costumer and a long-time seamstress, with a special interest in creating those special finishing touches that make a costume come to life. She has taught at Costume College in Los Angeles for many years, offering classes like making a beaded bead hatpin, making a Victorian or Edwardian purse, making a carpet bag, and making a buckram hat. Her current passion is to produce period garments that “might have been” the real vintage article. She currently lives in Prescott, Arizona, where she sews for many of the local re-enactment groups.
